The "River Dolphin Commission" is an official Cambodian part of the government with the mission to protect the unique freshwater dolphin population in the Mekong River between Kratie and Stung Treng province (the border with Laos). In this stretch of 160 kilometers are several very deep reefs where dolphins live during the dry season. Even during the wet season they are seen much in these locations. One of the places is just north of Kratie, in a place called Kampi. Many tourists visit from here the dolphins by boat. The people along the Mekong, are used to catch fish with big nets. They catch not only fish but also dolphins who don't survive in these nets. The rivers committees have 15 guards installed on the circuit, to avoid such nets are used. To provide an alternative way to earn money the river committees provided tractors to develop agricultural activities. The guards are paid by the Commission and live in small houses along the river or on an island in the Mekong. They have no electricity from the grid and receive a daily power from a few hours generator. The cost of diesel is now increasingly an unwanted ballast for the Commission. The solar panels of Pico Sol are a welcome solution to diesel savings and an environmentally friendly statement. The Commissioner has decided to help pay for these systems
